Janet’s sophomore album was somehow more tepid than her debut despite the fact that brothers Michael and Marlon cowrote and produced. Remember, at her career's onset, Janet was managed by her famously overbearing father, Joe Jackson, a major reason nothing on this debut sounds funky - or sexy. In other words, our fierce, empowered Janet has yet to emerge. The material here is too safe, too bland. Teenage Janet’s debut, at the age of 16 was cute, but with the exception of the single "Young Love," which cracked the Billboard R&B Top 10, it was not very memorable.
